Reedings Junior School

French

Children at Reedings are encouraged to work as linguists through a broad and balanced spiral curriculum which aims to build upon the previous years’ learning. We aim to ignite their curiosity about language learning and ready them for everyday life and employment in a global and digital society.

Our French curriculum gives children the opportunity to:

  • Develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, fostering an enjoyment of languages and successful language acquisition. We follow a meaningful and engaging syllabus, making cross curricular links where appropriate.
  • Become aware of the multi-cultural and multilingual world we live in, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others.
  • Celebrate languages and cultures represented across the school community.
  • Develop resilience and independence by taking an active part in lessons and experimenting creatively with language.

Through the learning of another language, we aim to foster our children’s curiosity about the world around them and the cultures of other people.

The learning of French language at our school, begins with speaking, reading and writing of basic greetings and vocabulary, such as colours and animals. This knowledge is built upon as children move into upper Key Stage two, looking at various themes such as food and drink, shopping and weather.

Children have the opportunity to use French during a variety of theme days linked to French traditions and celebrations for example: Chandeleur day was a great opportunity for children to use their French to order a crêpe and celebrate the festival of light.
