SEND
Meet our Senco
Miss Jody Ling
inco@reedings.herts.sch.ukReedings Junior School is a fully inclusive school that welcomes children of all abilities. We strive to be a community working together in a stimulating environment to encourage, inspire and support every child to see and reach their full potential – helping to raise happy, resilient and independent children who have a life-long love of learning.
We believe that all children, including those identified as having ‘special educational needs’ have a common entitlement to a broad and balanced academic and social curriculum which is accessible to them, and to be included in all aspects of school life. This does not mean that we will treat all learners in the same way, but that we will respond to learners in ways which take account of their varied life experiences and needs.
Children identified with SEND, in agreement with parents, will be placed on the school SEND register. The school uses a graduated approach to SEND, which includes 'assess, plan, do and review' for our children on the register with a One Page Profile and Provision Plan (OPP.)
We use Bsquared for assessing some of our children who are working below their year group. We are a Gold partner with Bsquared as we work hard to ensure that all our pupils can experience success and progress on their journey and Bsquared support us to do this.
We work closely with Fawbert & Barnard Infants' School in Sawbridgeworth to ensure that transition is as successful as possible and children with SEND generally manage the move to Reedings Junior school really well with the additional support that is put in place.
Please follow the links below for further information on Hertfordshire's Offer:
As part of the SEN reforms, Hertfordshire County Council has to provide access to information about what is on offer across the county. The purpose of the local offer is to provide clear, comprehensive and accessible information about the support and opportunities that are available for all children and young people with SEND aged 0-25 and their families (not just those who have an Education, Health and Care Plan).
The Local Authority are on an improvement journey to grow and upskill their SEND workforce and have written a blog to tell parents more about how they plan to achieve this. The blog can be found here along with further information:
Blog summary:
- We have secured £5m additional annual investment to help us deliver statutory SEND duties (processes relating to the EHCP).
- We are using this to recruit up to 80 new frontline professionals who will be responsible for managing EHCPs.
- EHCPs of school age children will be delivered by a dedicated 'school-age' team.
- We are using the expertise in our specialist services more effectively. Some EHCPs will be managed by EHC Coordinators who sit within teams across children's services - for example Early Years, Services for Young People, Virtual School - this means they will have access to appropriate expertise where required.
Neurodiversity Support Hub
We are delighted to be writing to let you know about the launch of The Hertfordshire Neurodiversity Support Hub. Following a pilot phase, we are excited to be able to roll this out across Hertfordshire thanks to funding from both Herts County Council (HCC) and the NHS. The Hub has initially been funded until the end of March 25 and ADD-vance have been commissioned to run the Hub, which is open Monday - Friday 9am-1pm.
The Hub is staffed by experts by experience, they can answer any questions to do with Neurodiversity, however big or small, or just be a listening ear. Please note, no diagnosis is required to access the support and the helpline is open to parents, carers and professionals.
The Hub can be contacted by phone on 01727 833963, with an answerphone facility for out of hours or by email at supporthub@add-vance.org
Please see a short digital animation which explains more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJmmvf_LTbU
At Reedings school we are very open to meeting and discussing any concerns that you may have.
In the first instance always speak with the class teacher. You may wish to request a meeting with them via the school office.
You can also request a meeting with the SENCO; again this can be done via the school office or by emailing: inco@reedings.herts.sch.uk

The Toolbox Live Chat, available at thetoolbox.mindler.co.uk, offers a safe and supportive environment for young individuals to discuss their feelings and concerns with a live person.
The Toolbox Live Chat can be used to talk about:
- Feelings and emotions
- Understanding Autism/ADHD
- Building and maintaining relationships
- Available services and resources in Hertfordshire
The Cogs app serves as a personal mental well-being coach, helping CYP to manage challenging situations and develop positive habits.

Supporting your Neurodivergent Child
Hertfordshire County Council and the NHS are delighted to share with you the exciting and new Supporting your Neurodivergent Child handbook that has been developed for Hertfordshire parent/carers and professionals. The Neurodiversity Handbook https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/microsites/local-offer/media-library/documents/resource-area-documents/supporting-your-neurodiverse-child-handbook-pdf-6.6mb.pdf has useful resources, support and signposting on a whole range of things relating to Neurodiversity.
The resource is accessible to all regardless of whether a young person has a diagnosis or not, and can be used at any point during a young person’s journey.
Sleep support
The free helpline is run by trained sleep advisors, many of whom are specialists in working with SEND. They can talk to young people directly, or parents (they can also talk to adults, including older people, about their sleep issues).
The helpline is open 5 times a week, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evenings 7-9pm, and Wednesday mornings 9-11am. The number is 03303 530 541.
Dyslexia support
This website offers a free font to download to help children with Dyslexia read from computer screens easier and is recommended by the British Dyslexia Association.
We cannot offer a full Dyslexia assessment in school as unfortunately this has been be undertaken privately, however if you have concerns about your child and dyslexia speak to your class teacher or the SENCO as we can put things in place to support in the classroom and there is the possibility that we could complete a screener which gives an indication on if dyslexia may be likely.
Anxiety support
If your child is too anxious to go to school (hertfordshire.gov.uk)
This page is designed to help parents whose children’s attendance is low due to anxiety, and has advice on how to support them and where to go for help.
Online Parenting Courses - Family Lives
Being a parent has never been easy. There are no manuals for it, and previous generations may not be able to provide the insight you're looking for. The family unit is more dispersed than ever, with some families existing hundreds of miles from what may be called a 'core unit'. The rapid pace of societal change in the UK rapidly outstrips the knowledge of the immediate past. The result is that many parents may find themselves lost in a maelstrom of contradictory advice. For adults, time has never been more compacted. Family Lives has produced a series of online parenting courses, to make this challenge a little easier. If interested please follow the link below:
https://www.familylives.org.
Family Lives offers a confidential and free* helpline service for families in England and Wales (previously known as Parentline). They can be contacted on 0808 800 2222 for emotional support, information, advice and guidance on any aspect of parenting and family life. Their website is also a rich source of useful support and advice.
